The Just Better Care Wollongong Roller Hawks are pleased to announce their first signing for 2026 with the return of fan favourite Squawkie the Hawkie for the upcoming season.
“We are very pleased to welcome Squawkie back to the nest after an extended hiatus,” said Roller Hawks Club President Geoff Adams.
“We know going into this season we need something extra to put ourselves over the top and having Squawkie’s services back in Roller Hawks colours could be just the edge we need in what is going to be a highly competitive season”.
Squawkie has signed a deal to promote the team throughout the year and appear at selected home matches during the season as the NWBL prepares to tip off on June 12 with six teams vying for supremacy.
In a year which will see the Roller Hawks celebrate 25 years in the national league, Squawkie will wear 00, a nod to the year 2000 which was actually the year the Roller Hawks were first conceived. They weren’t granted admission until 2001 so as not to disrupt the national league in the lead up to the 2000 Paralympics.
It’s been 10 years since Squawkie was last seen on the Roller Hawks sideline but the mascot insists he’s in prime condition and even ready to jump in a chair should Head Coach Brett Stibners require his services.
“I can’t guarantee there’ll be minutes in the senior line up but Squawkie's addition is a reminder that this club is more than just about the team that takes to the court each week,” said Adams.
“The team behind the team is incredibly important and that includes volunteers, fans and sponsors.”
“At the moment we still have team sponsorships available in Gold ($10,000), Silver ($5,000) and Bronze ($2,500). We’re very excited to have the large majority of our sponsors return from last season, which we’ll be announcing over the coming weeks, but we definitely need a few more.”
“It’s a tough economic climate, I know that, and it’s only gotten tougher over the last few weeks but there are tremendous benefits in being involved with the Roller Hawks. We have just added a new benefit to our Gold package which is having your choice of player come to your organisation as a guest speaker.”
“Silver and Gold gets your name on the back of our warm up tops and with every game of the national league being streamed this season, there’s going to be more coverage for our sport than ever.”
For those who can’t commit to a sponsorship package, the Roller Hawks are also seeking businesses who can contribute prizes to the club’s Trivia Night in April and raffles throughout the season.
